BYW85C is Telefunken Silicon Mesa Rectifier. An avalanche diode is a type of diode that is designed to operate in a region of its voltage-current characteristic where a phenomenon known as “avalanche breakdown” occurs. Avalanche breakdown is a process in which a small initial current or voltage causes a rapid and self-sustaining increase in current. This breakdown phenomenon is a result of impact ionization, where energetic electrons collide with atoms in the semiconductor material, freeing additional electrons and leading to a rapid increase in current.
