NTC thermistors are temperature-sensitive resistors whose resistance decreases as the temperature increases. When used as inrush current limiters, NTC thermistors are placed in series with a load, typically during the power-on process of electronic devices.

During the initial power-up, electronic devices can experience a surge of current, known as inrush current, as capacitors charge up and other components start operating. This inrush current can be potentially damaging to sensitive electronic components or can trigger protective circuits like fuses. NTC inrush current limiters help mitigate this issue by providing high resistance when cold (at room temperature) and then gradually decreasing their resistance as they heat up due to the flow of current.
