DRV3203-Q1 Datasheet PDF – Brushless Motor Driver

Part Number: DRV3203-Q1

Function: Three-Phase Brushless Motor Driver

Package: HTQFP (48) Type

Manufacturer: Texas Instruments

Image

Description

The DRV3203-Q1 device is a field-effect transistor (FET) pre-driver designed for three-phase motor control for applications such as an oil pump or a water pump. The device has three high-side pre-FET drivers and three low-side drivers which are under the control of an external MCU. A charge pump supplies the power for the high side, and there is no requirement for a bootstrap capacitor.

For commutation, this integrated circuit (IC) sends a conditional motor signal and output to the MCU. Diagnostics provide undervoltage, overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature and power-bridge faults. One can measure the motor current using an integrated current-sense amplifier and comparator in a battery common-mode range, which allows the use of the motor current in a high-side current-sense application. External resistors set the gain. One can configure the pre-drivers and other internal settings through the SPI.

Features

  • Three-phase gate pre-driver for external N-channel MOSFETs
  • Supports PWM control up to 20 kHz
  • Integrated charge pump (no bootstrap capacitor required)
  • High-side and low-side gate drive capability
  • SPI interface for configuration and diagnostics
  • Integrated current-sense amplifier and comparator
  • Configurable gain via external resistors
  • Built-in MCU reset generator
  • Phase comparators for commutation feedback
  • Automotive-grade reliability (Q1 qualified)

Design Notes

  • Requires six external N-channel MOSFETs to form a full 3-phase inverter bridge
  • Gate resistor selection is critical for controlling switching speed and EMI
  • Charge pump eliminates bootstrap limitations, allowing 100% duty cycle operation
  • Current sensing is high-side referenced, simplifying ground layout and improving accuracy
  • SPI configuration allows dynamic tuning (dead time, protection thresholds, gain)
  • PCB layout must minimize gate loop inductance to prevent ringing and false triggering
  • Thermal design depends primarily on external MOSFETs, not the driver itself

Advantages

  • Flexible power stage design using external MOSFETs
  • No bootstrap capacitor → improved reliability at high duty cycles
  • Comprehensive diagnostics for functional safety systems
  • High-side current sensing simplifies system architecture
  • SPI-based configurability enables advanced motor control strategies

Typical Applications

  • Automotive oil pumps
  • Electric water pumps
  • Cooling fans and blowers
  • Fuel pumps
  • Industrial BLDC motor control
