Z0103 Datasheet PDF – 1A, 600V, Triac

The Z0103 is a bidirectional thyristor, commonly known as a TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current). TRIACs are widely used in AC power switching applications, allowing current to flow in both directions when triggered.

Function: Standard 1A Triacs

Manufacturer: STMicroelectronics

Description

A TRIAC acts like two SCRs (silicon-controlled rectifiers) connected in inverse parallel, sharing a common gate for triggering in AC circuits.

The Z0103 series is suitable for general purpose AC switching applications. These devices are
typically used in applications such as home appliances (electrovalve, pump, door lock, small
lamp control), fan speed controllers,…

Different gate current sensitivities are available, allowing optimized performance when driven
directly through microcontrollers.

Features

1. On-state rms current, IT(RMS) 1 A

2. Repetitive peak off-state voltage, VDRM/VRRM 600 or 800 V

3. Triggering gate current, IGT (Q1) 3 to 25 mA

4. Simple bidirectional AC control with a single device

5. Gate current is low → easy interfacing with microcontrollers or opto-triacs

6. Can switch AC loads without mechanical relays

Operating Principle

1. Off-State: No gate signal; TRIAC blocks voltage in both directions

2. Triggering: A small gate current pulse triggers conduction in either direction

3. On-State: TRIAC conducts until AC current drops below the holding current (IH) at the zero crossing of the AC waveform

4. Turn-Off: AC current naturally falls to zero; TRIAC returns to blocking state until next gate pulse

Applications:

1. AC switching

2. Home appliances

3. Motor speed controller

4. Heater controller
