Description
The TVR14471 is 470V, Zinc Oxide Varistor for Surge Protection.
A Zinc Oxide Varistor (ZnO varistor) is a specific type of voltage-dependent resistor that is commonly used to protect electronic circuits and devices from transient voltage surges or spikes. It is also known as a metal-oxide varistor (MOV) due to its composition.
The core material of a ZnO varistor is zinc oxide (ZnO), which is mixed with other metal oxide additives to enhance its electrical properties. The most common additives include bismuth oxide (Bi2O3), cobalt oxide (CoO), and manganese oxide (MnO2). The specific composition and processing of the varistor determine its electrical characteristics.
Zinc oxide varistors are nonlinear devices, meaning their resistance changes depending on the applied voltage. At low voltages, they exhibit a high resistance, effectively blocking the flow of current. However, when a voltage surge occurs and exceeds a specific threshold known as the “clamping voltage,” the varistor rapidly changes its resistance and becomes highly conductive. This behavior allows it to divert the excessive voltage away from sensitive components, protecting them from damage.
